Cell Phone ‘Prison’ Jar

September 12, 2013 by Crafty Teacher Lady +

I’m not sure if you are aware of this but teenagers are pretty much obsessed with their cell phones. While it’s true that I do have the occasional student who does not have a cell phone, I’d say 99% do and are glued to those little devices. It’s a constant battle to teach them cell phone etiquette and convince them that there is a time and place for electronics, but class time isn’t it.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against technology and I do actively seek out ways to incorporate new apps, websites, and tech ideas into my teaching. I LOVE Remind 101 and so do my students, for example. However, cell phones can be HUGE distractions in the classroom setting.

Enter the PHONE PRISON!

I originally saw this idea on Pinterest (of course) and tried to find the original source but the link led nowhere (don’t you just hate that?). So, I created my own version using a large glass cookie jar and black electrical tape for the ‘bars’. The words were printed out on white paper, then cut and glued to the jar.

The jar sits on top of a file cabinet in my classroom where it is easily in view. This students actually think it’s pretty funny and have said things like ‘I better tell my phone to be good so it doesn’t end up in prison’. Some have even voluntarily sequestered their own phones when they think they can’t control themselves!

This would work well in many other social situations, too, as I know many adults who seem to have a problem putting their phones away when they should be engaging with others who are in the same room as them. My grandmother even wants me to bring the jar to our family’s Christmas gathering!

What do you think? Where would you use one of these jars?

Absolutely gorgeous afternoon making memories with Absolutely gorgeous afternoon making memories with my sweet girl! We picked the best berries, then went home where my little sous chef practiced her fine motor skills by cutting the strawberries for homemade shortcake- my all time favorite dessert (and quickly becoming C’s favorite, too)! 🍓

The last couple of months have been super challenging regarding some unexpected health challenges for me, resulting in an emergency surgery 4.5 weeks ago, and getting back to feeling good enough to go on outings like today was at the top of my priority-list! I felt good and had a wonderful time with my best little bud!! 🥰

Also shout out to @browdersfreshpickins for allowing us to pick all along the outside rows so that C could easily use her walker in the field!
Happy Easter from our (reluctant) Bunny Stanley 🐶 and our happy little Reese’s-loving gal!! 🥰

And just like that, she’s 4!! ❤️🥰🍓❤️🥰❤️

We had a small family party while in Maine and I had so much fun putting together all the details! My favorite part of the decor was making the cake toppers to put onto a plain white bakery cake (I also added some fresh strawberries). I printed some strawberries and flowers on card stock and glued them to wood skewers. I made the pennant flags and bunting out of fabric from Joannes and used the same gingham for the table runners. It brings me so much joy to put together a little birthday party for my sweet little girl! Watching her grow and seeing her personality blossom is the greatest privilege of my life…she’s the best thing to ever happen to me!

And on that note, Happy Birthday, C, and Happy New Year to all of you!
