This week my students and I are having a Colonial Tea Party. They were asked to research and bring a colonial dish to share. I decided to make my Grand-Maman Denise’s molasses cookie recipe…true, she didn’t live in colonial times but her recipe is very simple with simple ingredients, much like colonial dishes. My mother and her family are French-Canadian (from Montreal) which means all of Grand-Maman’s recipes are in French. My mom was nice enough to translate some of my favorite recipes into English, including this one!
As you can see, the recipe isn’t very descriptive. My grandmother just knew what to do from memory. So, if you’d like to make these cookies, here’s what I did:
-Use an electric mixer to combine all of the ingredients listed above.
-Take a mini-ice cream scoop to drop perfect-sized cookies onto a non-stick baking sheet
-Bake at 425 degrees but ONLY for 8-9 minutes, NOT 11-12 minutes as it says on the card. My first batch went in for 11 minutes and they were burnt to a crisp! I think they need a lesser baking time because I was using a dark non-stick pan, which I don’t think my grandmother had ‘back in the day’.
-Remove from the oven and sprinkle with white sugar while cookies are still on the sheet. After about a minute, place on a wire rack to cool.
I enjoyed a couple cookies fresh from the oven with some hot apple cider that I got from the orchard last weekend. Please note the use of my FAVORITE mug!

The cookies are supposed to look like whoopie pies cookies – soft and chewy – and could be used to make whoopie pies with cream cheese middle. Yumm!
