Santa Came Early

October 9, 2012 by Crafty Teacher Lady +

My house is 1 year and 3 months old. While I’ve been diligently nesting on the inside, the outside has been severely neglected.  I don’t have much of a green thumb so the thought of doing any landscaping made me feel very overwhelmed with where to start!  While the house sits on about two, mostly wooded, acres I wanted the areas near the house to look ‘finished’ instead of like this hot mess…

This summer I did make a vain attempt to start a bed on the other side of the porch…Unfortunately this is as far as I got as I ran out of motivation (and money) to finish this project!
I did manage to put up a few decorations and potted plants on the porch this summer
but that was about all…
Then my most generous mother and step-father offered to give me the gift of landscaping as an early Christmas/birthday present (my birthday is December 20th). You know you’re a grown up when the thought of landscaping as a gift delights you to no end!  Their friend Ed Bush, of Bush’s Bushes, came over and worked his magic…
Some features include three high-bush blueberry plants, ornamental
rocks, and several other varieties of pink, purple, and yellow
perennials. I’m so excited to see what Spring will bring!
A couple ‘before’ and ‘afters’:

The landscaping makes the house look so much more ‘finished’.  Now that it’s done I know I can manage the upkeep of the beds without that overwhelming ‘where to start’ feeling!

I’m so grateful and delighted!!

That looks great! The dark mulch looks nice with your black door and shutters. I put out two flats of pansies yesterday and they really made me smile. 🙂

Our daughter has worked so hard in physical therapy to overcome some gross motor challenges related to balance and coordination, most notably learning to walk independently. With some encouragement, she stood up and walked over for a hug! This seemingly mundane moment for most families is SUCH a huge milestone for us- one that is a culmination of YEARS of hard work. Words cannot express how proud I am to be her mom and to have a front row seat to true determination, perseverance, and patience…today was an awesome day and makes me so hopeful for the future! 💗

I hope my daughter is building core memories of her time here each summer as well…video captured while on a July Fourth family cruise in front of Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.

I can’t get enough of these cute visitors (and also know I won’t be spending a ton on landscaping since most plants won’t stand a chance)! 🤣

Buying an older home vs building new can have its perks- one being an established yard (which I just fell in love with). We’ve got neighbors all around, however, the backyard feels pretty private thanks to landscaping done years ago by the previous owners!
Facebook Marketplace for the win! I’m so in love w Facebook Marketplace for the win! I’m so in love with my recent find…the curves are just so darling! I often see many great finds on Marketplace but because I don’t have a truck or trailer, I have to miss out on a lot. I knew this desk would fit in the back of my SUV so I jumped at the chance to grab it. What’s your favorite secondhand find?
